Weeks Eight-Ten: Wrapping It Up

This entry is going to cover not only Week Eight but actually the rest of my internship all in one fell swoop – I know, I’m a terrible person, and I really should’ve kept on top of writing my blog posts, but I was distracted by all the great stuff happening!

Weeks Eight and Nine were what I imagined typical consulting weeks to be like, with a fair amount of work but also a couple more dinners with the whole team. Now that we had our new CTL and everything settled down a bit more than when I wrote last time, I’ve had a better sense of actually getting to know the people on the team. Sadly, my time at Bain was wrapping up just as I was beginning to feel like Boston was home.

The last week of my internship was intense, not only because (obviously) I was going to have to say goodbye to some of my favorite people, but also because we were going to find out about offers. Unlike a lot of other companies, Bain actually doesn’t have a huge cut rate between who they take for the internship versus give an offer to return at the end of the ACI summer – Bain does most of that winnowing before the ACI internship even starts, preferring to follow a model of giving fewer people the internship but in turn offering most of them the chance to return as Associate Consultants. All of which goes to say that people kept telling us we shouldn’t be too worried about offers coming out, but I’d be lying if I said I was completely calm about the whole thing…I’d also recently discovered how to use the espresso machine in the Bain café the week before, which didn’t help things.

Eventually it was that time – a highly-caffeinated version of me walked into a conference room to hear how my internship had turned out in the end. (Spoiler alert: it had gone well.) I was given an offer to return – actually, all fourteen of the interns in my office were – and I accepted only a couple weeks after receiving my offer. I’m super excited to return to Bain next year as an Associate Consultant after finishing up my fourth year at the University of Virginia; I’ll be back in the Boston office, and I can’t wait to see everyone else with whom I interned also back in the same place.

TL;DR (internet slang for Too Long; Didn’t Read) version: I couldn’t have asked for a better way to spend ten weeks of my third year summer. The people I worked with were universally super smart and super nice – which has since become my stock phrase when people ask me what Bain is like – and the work I did was both challenging and meaningful. I know coming back to Bain will be an excellent experience, and although I’m not entirely sure where I’ll be in 5 more years, I know that Bain is where I want to spend at least a couple of them.
